McGregor staff profiles

  • Julie Walkup Bird

    Julie Walkup Bird has been the pastor/head of staff of McGregor since 2009. A graduate of Columbia Theological Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia, Julie has served congregations in Texas, South India, and Scotland. 

    Beyond the local church, Julie has served as a PC(USA) delegate to the World Communion of Reformed Churches and the National Council of Churches in Christ. She has been a lifelong Presbyterian whose faith has been deeply enriched by people from various denominations, cultures, and faith traditions. Julie is committed to faithful worship, compassionate living, and empowering God’s people to live out their faith in the world.

    Julie was raised in Clearwater, Florida, and feels right at home with sand between her toes. Julie’s husband, Adrian, originally from England, teaches at Union Theological Seminary in Charlotte. They have two elementary-age children, Nathan and Lydia.   

  • Michele Glasscock

    Michele is the office manager of McGregor Presbyterian Church. She and her husband, Ed, are long-time members of McGregor. Michele became the office manager in 1997. She has a bachelor of science in business administration from Winthrop University.


    Michele and Ed have two grown daughters, Melissa and Kayla, who grew up at McGregor. Melissa, her husband, Dave Meverden, and their daughter, Lyla, live in Charleston. Kayla, her husband John Abernathy, and their cat, Marv, live in Salt Lake City, Utah. Michele enjoys reading (especially Nora Roberts and J.D. Robb novels), watching sports with Ed, and being a grandmother.

  • Joy Ackerman

    Joy has served for more than 30 years as director of music at McGregor Presbyterian Church, sharing her musical gifts as both organist and adult choir director. She holds a bachelor of arts degree in music and a master of education degree in elementary guidance from the University of South Carolina. Joy has furthered her education as a church musician through annual attendance at the Montreat Conference on Worship and Music. She and husband Bill live at Lake Murray near Irmo. Now that she is retired from her other career in elementary guidance, Joy enjoys concerts and recitals, movies, sunset boat rides, being a grandmother to Ben, and continuing to serve through music at McGregor.  


    Karen is the Discipleship Coordinator of McGregor Presbyterian Church.  She and her husband Troy became members of McGregor in November, 2008. Karen retired from her job as a property accountant from a local commercial real estate firm in 2014.  

    Karen and Troy have one daughter, Megan along with her husband Brendon and two grandchildren, Everly and Elijah who live in Greer, SC.  Now in her spare time, she enjoys reading historical fiction, traveling and being GiGi to her sweet grandchildren.
